about

Having gained support from the likes of Tom Ravenscroft, BBC 6 Music Focus Beats, Spotify Jazz UK, Moses Boyd, Bandcamp and sharing stages with James Holden, Colin Stetson & Sarathy Korwar, Leeds-based multi instrumentalist Greg Surmacz presents his new LP ’What We Can Assume'. Blending UK bass sonics with jazz sensibilities and ambient textures, Greg continues to forge his own path, creating a sound which is entirely his own. This album coincided with his attempts to engage with the world again, after a difficult few years - travelling more, getting involved with cultural experiences.

The LP’s many inspirations include the energy at the Leeds West Indian Carnival ('Back On The Road' contains field-recorded samples from there) and the collegiate spirit of connecting with long-time friends and collaborators. More broadly, this record has a more hopeful sound - looking out and up rather than in. Greg explains: ‘I thought a lot of the phrase 'hope for the best, assume the worst'. If the last few years have taught me anything, it's that we can't assume much - and actually, when the worst happens, it's usually not as bad as you imagined.’
